Today I tried to explain to my students the added value of using an ePortfolio-tool (additionally to our LMS) . And, I have to admit, that this wasn't an easy task. From today's view (at the beginning of this term) I have to ask myself what advantages an learning and reflection ePortfolio-tool (we use elgg in our own installation ) has compared to the use of a discussion forum and a wiki within a LMS-course.
The only real added value of ePortfolios I can see so far is the one of having a powerful tool for managing ones documents (assessments, reports, certificates, ...) and having the possibility to produce customized presentations out of this repository (like OSPI 1.0 worked). ELGG isn't the tool of joice for that.
